Live near Oak Harbor? We need you!
The Portage Fire District relys on part-paid (“volunteer”) firefighters to respond from home when an emergency call comes in. The more members we have, the higher the chances we have crews ready to go!
Our personnel include construction workers and supervisors, college students, road workers, alarm system techs, roofers, HVAC techs, orchardists, and full-time firefighters.
F A Q
“But, I’ve never been a firefighter before…”
No worries — you don’t need experience! We’ll put you through the training you need to get your firefighter and CPR certifications.
“I’m pretty busy. What’s the time commitment?”
Three hours of paid training per week. Firefighter I certification is one semester worth of class. As for calls — when you’re available, you respond from home.
“I love it, but my family’s a bit nervous.”
Totally understandable. Firefighting is a dangerous job. We give you the best possible training to prepare you for intense situations. And did you know retail workers have a higher fatality rate in the United States than firefighters?*
We welcome your families to attend drill ahead and encourage you to let them be your decision. Their support will be vital to your success as a firefighter.
